AeroPress: A Comprehensive Guide to Recipes and Techniques for Exceptional Coffee
Share
TL;DR
The AeroPress extracts coffee by pressure and immersion in 1-2 minutes: fast, tolerant of variations in grind and temperature. It forgives errors where the V60 is demanding. The inverted method and numerous competitive recipes make it an accessible precision tool for everyone.
The AeroPress is the preferred brewing tool of many world champion baristas. Lightweight, fast, almost unbreakable, it produces concentrated, smooth coffee with little bitterness in less than 2 minutes. It is also one of the most flexible methods: each variable (ratio, grind, temperature, time) can be adjusted to obtain very different profiles depending on the origin used.
Why is the AeroPress so popular with enthusiasts?
The AeroPress combines two principles: immersion (like the French Press) and pressure (like espresso, but much lower). This combination allows for quick extraction of aromas without over-extracting bitter compounds. The result is coffee with a very low perceived acidity and natural sweetness.
Its popularity in the specialty community is also due to its travel-friendly nature: perfect for travel, camping, offices without an espresso machine. With good whole bean coffee from our selection, you get a result comparable to coffee shop coffee.
The classic AeroPress recipe
Equipment: AeroPress, AeroPress paper filter, grinder, scale, thermometer, timer.
Basic ratio: 15 to 17 g of coffee for 200 to 220 ml of water.
Grind: fine to medium-fine.
Steps for the classic recipe:
- Rinse the paper filter with hot water and assemble it in the cap
- Place the AeroPress on your cup, normal position
- Pour the ground coffee into the chamber
- Add water at 85-90°C in 10 seconds
- Stir for 10 seconds
- Insert the plunger and press gently, without forcing
- Stop pressing as soon as you hear the air hiss
The inverted method: why and how?
The inverted method involves turning the AeroPress upside down, plunger first, for a longer immersion and total control of the brewing time. No drops pass during brewing, which prevents under-extraction in the first few seconds. It is preferred by many baristas for its reproducibility.
What water temperature for AeroPress?
Contrary to popular belief, the AeroPress does not require very hot water. A temperature between 80 and 90°C is often recommended for light to medium roasts. For darker roasts, you can go up to 92-94°C.
Which coffee to choose for AeroPress?
The AeroPress adapts to almost all origins. For fruity and complex profiles, opt for African origins like our Ethiopia or Colombia selection. For sweet and chocolatey profiles, Central American origins (Guatemala, Nicaragua) work very well.
